Jump the Blues Away

playlist for bluegrass show Feb 12

On Saturday Feb 10 I subbed for Diane Herring's show Lunch on the Back Porch. I had a ball. (I also didn't make any technical goofs.)
Diane plays pretty traditional bluegrass, and I had told her that I would wander toward more modern stuff, which was fine with her.
Themes:
Jerry Douglas and Sam Bush seemed to be on more than half the cuts, which was not my design. On the other hand, what's wrong with that?
Lots of beautiful voices: Moondi Klein, Dolly Parton, John Cowan, Mollie O'Brien, Alan O'Bryant, John Starling, Maura O'Connell, Emmylou, Linda Ronstadt, Jonathan Edwards, Alison Krauss, Peter Rowan. Sam Bush is a great singer, though not a voice in the same class.

The theme here, to the extent there was one, was bass players and guitarists. Lots missed out, of course: Oscar Pettiford, Ray Brown and Milt Hinton among bassists, and guitarists Jim Hall, Barney Kessel, Allen Reuss, to name just two.

Some of you will have realized that the emphasis is on jazz from the 30s and 40s, with a few forays earlier, and more recent recordings are not too “modern” in sound. My show will not present free jazz, or “smooth” jazz, for example, because it’s my show and I will play what I want. And hope you like it. Not that I won’t take suggestions.

Notes:
As Piano Jazz wasn't set up to play all the way through, I filled in with the above music. And I got considerably flustered, I am sorry to say, with the result that I played songs out of order and misidentified others. Better luck next time.
The show featured versions of the three great swing tunes by composer Edgar Sampson: Blue Lou, Don't Be That Way, and Stompin' at the Savoy, plus two of his other compositions, Lullaby in Rhythm and If Dreams Come True. Also: some of the great big band drummers, and four songs about the hometowns of the four teams in the NFL playoffs that day.
